Scamboli Reviews – Dissecting Anitube #2

Ohhh boy, it’s Scamboli Reviews. He’s one of the newer anime YouTubers on the block, only having begun making content in late 2018. While I first dismissed him as some basic anime review channel like several I’ve seen before, there’s something, not special, but entertaining about his content that kept me coming back each time he put out a new video. Eventually, I binged all of his content, and now decided to review his content to present my observations and opinions to you.

That first statement I made about Scamboli isn’t necessarily untrue. Almost all of his arguments are fairly basic, hardly elaborating on his points and not structuring them in a way that’s particularly organized. I mean, sometimes he uses the standard video review format with the segments dedicated to story, characters, animation, and sound. Though, some of his videos are also just general discussions about topics surrounding anime. He made this video discussing the top 10 black characters in anime which was actually just a joke video where he features random meme characters. He also made this video called “bad anime”, where he complains about people who watch “bad anime” being children and/or morons, despite the fact that “objectively bad” doesn’t exist, because we’re all just making up our own rules and qualifiers for what makes “good storytelling”. Also, he massively generalizes the reasons that people may like this show, debunks these straw man arguments as stupid, and calls the fans of the shows stupid for thinking they’re good. In parts, he goes on a tirade about the people leaving dumb comments on his past videos, particularly the one on Kenja no Mago. Scamboli’s entire “bad anime” video is an uninformed, impulse-driven rant. Though, if it were just that, I wouldn’t have cared enough to watch through entire video. There are tons of anime YouTubers who can spout a stupid, demeaning tirade into their microphone for 15 minutes, but few make it as entertaining as Scamboli Reviews. I’m not saying he’s a genius comedian or anything, or even that he’s nearly the funniest anime YouTuber. Though, the snappy pacing of his videos, his lackadaisical voice, and chuckle-worthy quips and gags which flow through his script all coalesce in an overall entertaining experience, even when his argument is utterly daft. And at the end of the day, he doesn’t seem like he’s taking himself all that seriously. I’m not completely aware of his intentions with this channel, but from his manner of speaking and constant gags, he never comes off as arrogant or acting like he’s anything more than a simple guy making videos on YouTube for fun. If that’s the case, then I’m okay with that, and he’s good enough of an entertainer to earn my frequent returns to his channel every time he uploads a new video.

I give Scamboli Reviews a B- in my subjective rating system; he’d go in the B tier if this were a tier list. I like rating stuff, and I like writing, what can I say. Scamboli’s fine by me; check him out if you just crave some entertaining YouTube and don’t care about anything else. I’ve been Mewthony Mewtano, and I’ll see you in the spiral.
